New Semester Starts

13 September 2011 (Tuesday)

Today is my second day of the new semester (semester 1 in 2011/2012), everything back to the normal routine: experiments, journals, manuscripts, classes, assignments, presentations, etc. I have to re-adjust my mindset from leading an easy and comfortable lifestyle back to the current task-oriented and busy schedule of a postgraduate research student. But still, compare to my previous working life, this is no doubt a heaven to me! Blessed by the Lord!

Well, today's class is Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory (CHM 5002) conducted by the subject coordinator Prof. Mohd. Aspollah bin Hj Md Sukari every Tuesday from 11a.m - 1p.m. The maximum students allowed to register for this course is 40 persons but in the end there were more than 50 students attended the class. Many of them are not registered for this class so the chances for them to take this subject would be very slim. Sometimes, I just couldn't understand these young people why have to wait until the very last minute to register. Couldn't they just do it earlier? If the number of students already reach its maximum, then go for other classes available or wait until next semester.

As usual, today is only the overall introduction of the course. At the end of this course, students should be able to safely handle, store and dispose of laboratory hazardous chemicals as well as to gain comprehensive knowledge on various procedures related to safety in the chemical laboratory. Science students, especially chemical students dealing with a wide range of chemicals, should bear the responsibility to ensure everyone's safety by understanding the management of hazardous chemicals and knowing the laboratory safety as their priority. For me, this is a good course to refresh my memory on what I have learnt in the past and to gain additional knowledge on what I do not know. One interesting fact about this course is, there will be a site visit(s) to selected organizations (based on approval from either Kualiti Alam Sdn. Bhd., NIOSH or others) and talks from invited speakers will be carried out as well. The good thing is that the assessment will be conducted based on 80% course work and 20% final examination! That's what I like the most to be evaluated mainly based on one's performance in the class rather than exam-based.

Briefing on Graduate Studies

Date: 30 December 2010 (Thursday)
Venue: Great Hall, UPM
Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm

This is my first day attending a formal event in UPM before the 1st semester begins. It is a brief talk given by the Deputy Dean from the School of Graduate Studies for all the new postgraduates touching on UPM (Graduate Studies) Rules 2003 and introduction to the students' portal. They have a very good system in managing all the postgraduates online called internet Graduate Information Management System (i-GIMS). Students can access to their portal internally and externally to check on the status, result, personal info and add/drop courses during the registration period. Their management system is so much efficient if compared to my previous UKM, haha! Well, this is a brand new beginning in my life, it marks as my transition milestone in this new year!

Sitting inside the Great Hall of UPM, I had recalled many fond memories in the past. First time when I was here, was about 9 years ago. That time I sat for an external paper called Japanese language exam for level 4 which is the very basic one and now here I am again, as an UPM postgraduate student. Time flies and many things had change. In 4 years time, I wish I will be standing here again, as a PhD Degree holder. This is not an easy task but I know I can do it! Ganbatte!
